Text Neck in Singapore: Why Your Phone Is Wrecking Your Neck (And the 3-Minute Fix)

The average Singaporean spends over 7 hours a day on their phone. Add a laptop at work and a commute spent scrolling Instagram on the MRT, and your neck is holding your head in the wrong position for most of your waking life. The result is a condition you've probably heard of but may not realise you have: text neck.

What is text neck, really?
Your head weighs about 5 kilograms when it sits directly over your shoulders. But for every inch you tilt it forward to look at a screen, the effective weight your neck has to support roughly doubles. At a 45-degree tilt — the angle most people hold their phone at — your neck is carrying the equivalent of a 27-kilogram load. That's a small child hanging off the back of your neck, for hours every day.
Over months and years, this constant forward load does three things. First, the muscles at the back of your neck weaken and lengthen because they're being stretched instead of worked. Second, the muscles at the front of your neck tighten and shorten. Third — and this is the serious bit — the natural C-shaped curve of your cervical spine begins to flatten, and in advanced cases can even reverse direction.
Why Singapore is a text neck hotspot
We see more text neck in Singapore than almost anywhere else we've practised, and there are clear reasons why. Our commutes are phone commutes — the MRT is basically a 40-minute forward-head-posture session twice a day. Our jobs are screen jobs, with Singapore ranking among the world's highest for daily desk hours. And our climate keeps us indoors, meaning less of the natural movement and stretching that used to break up sedentary time.
The result is that we're now seeing text neck in people much younger than before. Teenagers with the cervical x-rays of 50-year-olds. Twenty-somethings with chronic headaches they assume are normal. Office workers in their thirties who can't turn their head properly to check a blind spot while driving.
The warning signs most people ignore
Text neck doesn't usually announce itself with dramatic pain. It creeps in as a collection of small, easily dismissed symptoms: a stiff neck in the morning that you blame on your pillow, tension headaches behind the eyes, a dull ache between the shoulder blades, jaw tightness, and a general sense of heaviness in the upper body. Some people notice their head juts forward in photos. Others find they can't comfortably lie flat on the floor without a cushion under their head.
Here's a quick self-check you can do right now: stand with your back against a wall, heels, bum, and shoulders touching. Does the back of your head touch the wall naturally, or do you have to push it back to make contact? If you have to push, your head is sitting forward of your shoulders — the hallmark sign of text neck.
The good news: it's reversible
Text neck is primarily a muscle problem, and muscles respond to input. The deep muscles at the back of your neck — the ones responsible for holding your head upright over your shoulders — have forgotten how to do their job because they've been unloaded for so long. Retrain them, and the whole system starts coming back into alignment.
The catch is that ordinary stretching doesn't fix it. Most people with text neck intuitively try to stretch their neck when it feels tight, but stretching already-overstretched muscles makes the problem worse. The 3-minute daily routine our chiropractors use
